Social Media – The Great Connector

Post 44 of 109

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has often stated that his ultimate goal is to “connect the world.”  While he is talking about providing Internet access for all people no matter their socioeconomic status, I would argue that social media connects the world in many other ways as well.

Connecting the world

Since getting into the digital space, one of my favorite social media platforms (read “guilty pleasures”) is Quora.

If you aren’t familiar, Quora is an online Q&A service that allows everyday people to post questions on a broad range of topics for “experts” to address.

Each time I receive my periodic email update, I am blown away by the people responding to the questions posed.

I have seen responses from “celebrities” as varied as President Barack Obama and Travis Barker, drummer for the band Blink 182 to DJ Steve Aoki and Francis Lawrence, director of The Hunger Games.

Do you have a question for the President?

If you ask on Quora, you just might just get an answer straight from the horse’s mouth!

Which brings me to the point of this post…

Social media is an absolutely AMAZING tool for connecting with people with whom you ordinarily might not connect and serves to make the world just a little smaller.

Are you a big fan of a particular celebrity?

Send Lady Gaga a tweet and you might just get a personal answer as “Ally” did on March 24, 2014.

Social media is the modern day version of the fan club, except now, it is more likely that the celebrity in question is answering you themselves.

Another great side benefit to this easy connection is social customer service.

Do you have an issue with something you purchased?

Message the company on Facebook or Twitter and chances are you will hear back from a concerned customer service representative pretty quickly.

Are you looking to confirm that something is occurring?

Maybe you can’t access LinkedIn or you thought you felt an earthquake but aren’t quite sure…

Social media is now the first place I turn.

Not only can I get answers but I feel assured that I am not alone, especially in a potential emergency situation.

And these are just a few examples of ways that social media is helping people connect in their everyday lives.
